Everlasting

The Trade

How long will you trade the everlasting for the barley lasting?

Let that question drop onto your soul for a moment.
Philippians 4:8 says: Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of respect, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if something is excellent or praiseworthy, think about these things. (NET)

Whatever I am thinking about or concentrating on, whatever consumes my mind, that is what I am placing eternal value on. If it’s not Jesus or the Word of God, it’s not everlasting. It is temporal or barely lasting.

There are a lot of thoughts that consume my mind these days: my mom’s health, my son’s spiritual position, my daughter’s finances, as well as my own in this present economy. Although these are important life things, they are temporal.

When I shift my focus to Jesus, to God’s provision and promise, I have hope(Rom 5:5), and hope does not disappoint.

Whatever we “absorb” into our lives: edgy, borderline porn, tv shows, sex-filled R-rated movies, course language, jokes, phrases, etc., that is what we value!

We have only to look at our spending, both in time and finances, to know what we value.

How is your spending? Is it on the everlasting or the barely lasting?
