Nathan the prophet told this story to David after he had committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed.
Two men were in a certain town, one rich, one poor. The rich man owned many sheep but the poor man only had one little lamb that he loved and fed from his own plate.
One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own herd, the rich man took the poor man’s pet lamb and killed it. Then he prepared it as food for his guest.
David was furious and vowed that the man who would do such a thing should be put to death!
Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man!” Then the LORD put a curse on David and his household.
David immediately confesses his guilt and repents. Nathan then affirms David in 2 Samuel 12:13 “Yes, but the LORD has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin. Nevertheless, because you have shown utter contempt for the LORD by doing this, your child will die.”
Sure enough, the son of David and Bathsheba is struck with a deadly illness and dies.
Our sin has consequences! There is a residual of our sin that can become a thorn in our flesh.
David begged God to save his child, he even fasted and prayed for seven days. But the child died. Then David and Bathsheba conceived again and had Solomon, who became the wisest man on earth. But the curse the Lord put on David’s family continued to be a huge problem until his death.
Consequences — Avoid them at all costs by staying close to God and living according to His WORD.
