Psalm 23 is a wonderful chapter filled with promises of God’s nearness, guidance, and protection. We can resite it when we are stressed, anxious, or just scared of the unknown. We can read it for comfort on every level.
It begins with The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. God is my LORD, that is a relationship. I lack nothing! Tell yourself that when you are tempted to go shopping to fill a perceived need in your life. I shop when things feel out of control; buying something makes me feel in control. It’s a heart thing I need to surrender to Jesus.
He takes me to lush pastures, he leads me to refreshing water. There is rest and refreshment in God’s presence. He provides whatever we need, and we truly lack nothing.
He restores my strength. He leads me down the right path for the sake of his reputation. God’s reputation is on the line, He will do what He says He will do! It’s something you can count on. He is good, provider, restorer, rebuilder, and so much more.
Verse 4 says, Even when I must walk through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff reassure me.
I love the word “through” in this verse because it conveys several important messages: I will walk through dark times, He will be with me and comfort me, and I will get through it.
Through it! There will be a beginning, a middle, and finally an end. I will get through it, but only by the grace and presence of God. He won’t leave me to face it alone.
You prepare a feast before me in plain sight of my enemies. You refresh my head with oil; my cup is completely full. In the Bible days, people reclined while eating. This statement about eating in the sight of my enemies is so powerful; I can relax, rest, and eat a meal until I am stuffed.
Surely your goodness and faithfulness will pursue me all my days, and I will live in the LORD’s house for the rest of my life. God will pursue a relationship with me all the days of my life. I have only to open myself to God in every area of my life. And I will live in the LORD’s house for the rest of my life… talking about His presence.
It’s a short chapter, but it is packed with goodness. Take a minute and read it today for yourself, then open your life to His goodness and presence.
