The Holy Spirit

Elizabeth, Mary’s cousin, was the first person in the New Testament to receive the Holy Spirit. And yes, she was a woman! Luke 1:41 says: When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.

There are other accounts of the Holy Spirit coming upon someone; Mary, when Jesus was conceived, King David, when he wrote the Psalms, and all of the prophets sent by God to speak to the people. But the passage in Luke says Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit! This was a different dynamic. It’s the first mention of being filled.

John 14:26-27 says; But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you. Later, Jesus tells the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5). Acts 1:8 says; But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts of the earth.

There is an account of women being with the disciples in that upper room where they gathered, prayed, and waited. All these continued together in prayer with one mind, together with the women, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers. (Acts 1:14)

Jesus did more to elevate women than any women’s rights movement in history! But I want to emphasize John 14:26-27 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit… will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you. Through the Bible, God’s very words to us, the Holy Spirit will teach us, He will reveal Jesus to us! This is why he encourages us to follow Him every day in the scriptures and prayer. But I would add a time of listening too. Listen for Holy Spirit to speak to you, He will if we listen for Him.
