Does God want us to be brutally honest with Him? What about when we question what He is doing or His methods, can we be honest with Him about our feelings, hurts, or problems with Him?
I used to think if I disagreed with God about how He was doing something He might flick me away like a pesky bug. But I have found two things are true: He already knows how I feel in all circumstances. Second, He wants me to come to Him honestly about my feelings, He created them after all.
Job was honest with God and He was counted righteous. He even questioned God but he never faulted God or crossed the line of accusing God and cursing Him as his wife suggested. Job even had to endure his “friends” who thought his unconfessed sin caused his situation, have you ever heard of that one?
There is a point in Job’s questioning when God responds and asks: “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you possess understanding!” Job 38:4. But God never punished Job for questioning Him with desired understanding.
God wants us to come to Him! He delights in the conversation but does not favor the accusations. We come to God in humility and awe of who He is and all He does.
Mandisa has a song called “Prove Me Wrong”, in it as she is questioning why her friend died of cancer leaving a young family without their wife and mother. She writes “Would it be wrong if I asked you for proof? I wish that I could just believe, without questioning I’m just being honest with you. And they say your ways are better. But I still don’t understand.”
It’s this kind of honesty God honors and meets us in the midst of our pain.
