Let my prayers rise like incense before you.
Psalm 141 says, May you accept my prayer like incense, my uplifted hands like the evening offering!
Revelation 8:1-4 tells us: Now when the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them. Another angel holding a golden censer came and was stationed at the altar. A large amount of incense was given to him to offer up, with the prayers of all the saints, on the golden altar that is before the throne. The smoke coming from the incense, along with the prayers of the saints, ascended before God from the angel’s hand.
David often prayed for God to guard his mouth and keep him from pursuing evil or participating in sinful activities. Our prayers are powerful conversations with the Almighty God of the universe. What we talk to God about matters. It’s like my prayers rising above every situation I struggle with. God was very specific about when to use incense and what type to use: it was a big part of the Temple and sacrificial system.
