In John 14:26 Jesus says; But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you.
1 Corinthians 15:28 says in the Amplified version: However, when all things are subjected to Him (Christ), then the Son Himself will also be subjected to the One (the Father) who put all things under Him, so that God may be all in all [manifesting His glory without any opposition, the supreme indwelling and controlling factor of life].
When we accept God’s offer of Salvation through Jesus Christ, His Son, the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. He is the one who draws us to Christ and His Spirit is the one who will Advocate, Comfort, and Teach us through Christ.
But can we lose our Salvation? Can we return to our state of being before the indwelling of the Holy Spirit? This question has been debated by many scholars greater in knowledge than I.
I know someone who had a genuine relationship with Jesus and had been baptized in the Holy Spirit. This friend had dedicated her life to Jesus. She served Him, walked with Him, and studied the Word of God daily. To me she was a mentor and an ideal to model my walk after. (A mistake on my part. I should model my life after Jesus alone.)
Then one day she began to question the legitimacy of certain things in the Bible. She began to search for answers outside the Bible. After some time following this pattern (she still does), she decided that Jesus was not the Messiah and that the New Testament of the Bible was flawed and false. She turned away from her faith in Jesus. Today she follows the current sage she is listening to and adjusts her beliefs accordingly.
Has the Holy Spirit left her? Has she trampled on her salvation? Has she returned to an “unsaved” state of being? From what I am witnessing, Yes she has.
2 Timothy 3:7-8 says; always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
The Holy Spirit comes to live in us when we are saved. He infuses us with power when we are baptized in the Spirit. But He will leave us when we ask him to.
The short answer to the question titled above is no! I can not lose my salvation, BUT I can give it back or throw it in God’s face in anger. So Yes, one who has received salvation and experienced a real relationship with Jesus can turn away and become unsaved.
